Hamilton Carhartt & Company was founded and began producing overalls with two sewing machines and a half-horsepower electric motor in a small Detroit, Michigan loft. Carhartt worked closely with local railroad workers to ensure that his work bibs met their need for strong and long-lasting work clothes.

The beanie was first released in 1987. Soon after, in the early ’90s, the all-American line took off, not only in the blue collar world but also became part of the hip-hop culture.
